Each year the Italian publication Gambero Rosso tastes thousands of wines to determine the best Italian wines produced that year. Founded in 1986, the Gambero Rosso wine ratings in Vini d’Italia are built upon the number of glasses (bicchieri) awarded to a wine, the highest rating being three glasses (Tre Bicchieri). The ratings are based upon blind tastings by independent experts, first on a regional basis, and then a second round of tastings in Rome. Three Glasses indicate “extraordinary wine”, an award that goes to 5% of the wines reviewed. And most importantly, the award goes to the specific wine in the vintage reviewed (not to the Estate)… previous excellence means absolutely nothing.

Wines earning Tre Bicchieri, are not necessarily Italy’s most expensive or most “famous” wines! All wine regions are represented, as are all categories… red, white, still, sparkling, dessert.
