Arkenstone Description

Arkenstone is a property located high up on Howell Mountain (1,400-1650 ft above sea level) and it was purchased by Susan and Ron Krauz back in 1988. When the vineyard became available for purchase, it was Robin Lail who encouraged the Krauz’s to purchase the 13-acre estate. In 2006 the Krauz’s decided to hire Sam Kaplan to make their wines. In addition to Arkenstone, sam also produces wine for other Blue-Chip wineries such as Memento, Mori and Vangone.

We just tasted the entire flight from Arkenstone, and the wines were incredible. The wine that really spoke to us now was their NVD (Napa Valley Deisgnate) Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit for this cabernet comes from 3 extremely high-end vineyards in 3 of Napa’s top appellations. The Heimark Family Vineyard in Calistoga, The Godward Vineyard in Rutherford, and the Arkenstone Estate vineyard on Howell Mtn. IF you are familiar with Robin Lails flagship wine, J Daniels Cuvee, that wine is also sourced from the Heimark Family vineyard, and it sells for over $300 a bottle.

What we loved about this wine is it showcases the best component of each AVA from which the grapes are sourced. The Heimark Family vineyard provides fruit that gives this wine the upfront, sexy fruit it needs to be approachable. The Godward Vineyard in Rutherford gives that mid palate some minerality and some balance. The Arkenstone vineyard provides the structure this wine needs to age out for decades.

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 NVD Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color, giving up notes of black cherry preserves, baked plums and boysenberries with touches of cassis, spice box and dried mint. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and refreshing, delivering loads of red fruit sparks and a long, savory finish.
