Bernabeleva Garnacha De Vina Bonita 2019
Bernabeleva is the name of the property bought by Dr. Vicente Álvarez-Villamil in San Martín de Valdeiglesias in Gredos in 1923, but it wasn't until 2007 when the winery produced its first wines with the help of winemaker Raúl Pérez. Pérez brought winemaker Marc Isart to the winery, and he has overseen the wines ever since. If you are not familiar with Raul Perez and you love wine, you are missing out. He is Spain's version of Charles Smith. A vibrant and colorful individual that is an artist as well as a master of his craft. I have never had a bottle produced by Raul Pérez that I did not enjoy.
The Bernabeleva estate garners 30 hectares of old vines (45+ years) and they rent a further 10. All the farming for this producer is done biodynamically.
The palest, most elegant and nuanced of the single-vineyard reds was the 2019 Garnacha de Viña Bonita, from a vineyard on compact granite and very shallow soils. 2019 was warm and dry but not as much as 2017, and the wines are more harmonious. It has 14.44% alcohol and a pH of 3.32, which means good ripeness, full aromatic and flavor development and a vibrant and fresh palate with great balance and beautiful texture. This is rich, fresh, and elegant at the same time. Very tasty and long. Really very good! 1,100 bottles were filled in May 2021.
