Bodegas Hermanos Pecina - Gran Reserva Senorio De P. Pecina 2011

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Description

We used this wine in a tempranillo tasting a little over a year ago and it was not only the best wine on the flight it was the biggest seller in the room. Fast forward a year we had the chance to re-visit the wine to see how it was drinking, and there is no question that the wine is drinking even better. This wine is a reminder why we look to Spain for the best quality to price ratio red wines that you will find in the marketplace.

Bodegas Hermanos Peciña is in the heart of Rioja Alta, more specifically in Sonsierra Riojana, where the vine growing tradition dates back several centuries. Sonsierra is a prime area within the region where some of the highest quality grapes are grown in Rioja. Hermanos Pecina’s vineyards range from 475 to 600 meters, which allows for phased and uniform harvesting. The soil composition in the region consists of calcareous clay with high amounts of limestone. Vines planted in this soil type leads to wines that are soft and balanced with good volume on palate and acidity on the back end to produce age-able food friendly wines.

Pecina’s Gran Reserva is their top wine, source from 60–70-year-old vines. All grapes are harvested from Pescina’s top vineyard by hand, destemmed, and fermented naturally in tanks. The wine then spends 4 years in neutral oak casks followed by 3 years in bottle prior to release. These wines are ready to drink on release and will continue to age for decades!

95 Pts Decanter - Founded in 1992 in San Vincente de la Sonsierra, the bodega now owns 50ha of vineyards, and this gran reserva is made with grapes from its oldest vines. Part of the company’s main range, named after its founder, the wine is 95% Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Garnacha, aged for 48 months in used American oak.
