Bodegas y Vinedos Artuke Paso Las Manas Rioja 2022

One of the most exciting vignerons of the region … the wines show the character of the place where they are born: true terroir wines.” Luis Gutiérrez of Wine Advocate on Bodegas y Viñedos Artuke

Bodegas Y Vinedos Artuke Description

Bodegas Artuke is a small family run winery located in Banos de Ebro a village in Rioja Alavesa. At the helm of the winery are two brothers, Arturo, and Kike Miguel. The name “Artuke” is a conjunction of their names.

Bodegas Artuke has gained a reputation based on their unique approach to winemaking. The Miguel family rejected making wines under the constraints of the Rioja classification system. Typically, wineries in this region will have a Crianza, Reserva, and a Grand Reserva denomination on their various bottlings. The grapes can be sourced from various plots and typically the grapes are purchased from the growers in the region. Artuke goes against the grain by focusing on estate single vineyard plots and using neutral oak barrels to allow each unique terroir to shine through.

Arturo handles the winemaking duties at Bodegas Artuke. Arturo is a quiet, yet influential leader that is leading a movement of young Spanish winemakers in Rioja. The agenda is to make wines that represent the terrior in which they are sourced as opposed to making wines that represent the house. This is a similar dynamic to what Jonathan Maltus achieved in Bordeaux with the “Le Dome” Vineyard in St Emilion.

Its also important to note all farming is done both sustainably and organically. This wine was awarded 94 Pts by Robert Parkers wine advocate @ a release price of $55 a bottle. It tastes even better under $40

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

The 2022 Paso Las Mañas was selected from the 3.9 hectares of Tempranillo and has similar parameters as the 2021, but the feeling is quite different. This is more serious, slightly riper (but with the balance the whole range showed), juicy and young, a little closed, with fine tannins. 7,000 bottles were filled in December 2023.
