Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso 2019

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Description

The Ciacci Piccolomini dAragona estate, whose origins date back to the 17th century, produces some of Italys most highly regarded wines. In 1985, estate manager Giuseppe Bianchini inherited the property from Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini dAragona, who had no heirs. Today, his children, Paolo and Lucia Bianchini, continue making excellent Brunellos in the tradition of their father, who died in 2004. The 85 acre estate in the prized Castelnuovo dellAbate zone includes the famed Pianrosso site. The vineyards are located between Poggio dArna and the Orcia River on the southwest side of Montalcino at an altitude of 787 to 1,181 feet. Organic fertilizers are employed along with double pruning and green harvesting. The Bianchinis own three cellars the ancient Palazzo cellar, the main Molinello cellar and the Santo Stefano cellar, located in Montenero, which is used solely for production of their Montecucco DOC wine. The Ciacci wines all speak of flawless quality and exhibit Tuscan typicity crafted in a modern style.

Ciacci’s “Pianrosso” bottling is sourced from their top single vineyard “Vigna di Pianrosso”. 'Pianrosso' This is the single vineyard bottling for which Ciacci Piccolomini has built its outstanding reputation. The Pianrosso vineyard covers 11 hectares (about 27 acres) which are authorized to produce Brunello D.O.C.G. The land is medium grain with good levels of marl, dating from the Eocene period. The altitude of this vineyard varies from 240 to 360 meters above sea level. Aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a minimum of eight months in bottle before release, Ciacci Piccolomini's Pianrosso typically has a complex nose with a fruit forward palate and mouth filling power. This wine will pair well with roasted red meats, rich pasta courses and aged Italian cheeses.

100 Pts Kerin O’Keefe - Boasting great depth and extreme elegance, the drop-dead gorgeous Ciacci Piccolomini Pianrosso delivers crushed raspberry, succulent Morello cherry, star anise and crushed mint flavors while aromas of eucalyptus, wild rose, new leather and forest floor continuously lift out of the glass. It’s a smooth, stunning wine, with taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that lend great aging potential and energy. Absolutely stunning.

Wine Advocate: 97 Points

The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens to a wide and all-encompassing bouquet with dried cherry or cherry pie with the crust, plum tart and rose potpourri. There are evident oak tones, but they fold into underbrush, grilled herb and the generous texture of this wine. Likewise, the 15% alcohol content also neatly disappears into the wine's fleshy fruit consistency. For sure, this is a wine that needs more bottle evolution in order to hone in on the silkiness and pretty freshness of such an important Sangiovese. Exactly 43,054 bottles were made along with about 1,000 larger formats.
