Clos Figueras Font de la Figuera Red 2021

Winery was set up by Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador.

Clos Figueras Description

Clos Figueras is owned by Christopher Canaan a long-time importer for a great portfolio, Europvin. Europvin has brought labels such as Clos Mogador, Clos Martinet, Vega Sicilia, La Rioja Alta, and many other top Spanish labels into the U.S. Christopher and his wife always wanted to eventually settle in Spain, so when Rene Barbier introduced them to this plot of land everything came together quickly in 1997. The estate was 10 hectares of extremely old vine Carignan and Grenache that were well over 20 years of age at that time. The landscape is breathtaking, high altitude, terraced slopes. The vines Planted in the Black Slate or “Licorella”, the subsoil that makes the wines from this region so intriguing. You can also see the famous “Ermita” Vineyard from one of the terraced vineyards on the Clos Figueras Estate. Everything on the Clos Figueras estate was set up by Rene Barbier.

White the top Priorats like Clos Mogador and L’Ermita will run you $150-$300+ a bottle, Clos Figueras can be had for a fraction of the price. I can recall tasting the 2010 Vintage of Clos Figueras like it was yesterday, and I absolutely flipped for the wine. We just taste the 2021 vintage of the wine and Charles, and I were floored. It’s amazing to see this wine start to come into its zone as the vines gain age. Clos Figuras is REALLY starting to hit its stride.

While the 2021 has not been rated by Parker Yet, the 2020 scored 93 Pts. We preferred the 2021 to the 2020.

A Baby Clos Mogador!

93 Pts Wine Advocate (2020 vintage) - 2020 was atypical in Priorat, and the 2020 Font de la Figuera has 14.5% alcohol, a full 1% less than the 2019 I tasted next to it. It's young, perfumed and elegant, with very fine tannins. It's still marked by the toast from the barrels where it spent some 12 months. It should develop nicely in bottle. 7,700 bottles reflect a lower crop this year. It was bottled in March 2022.

Winemaker Notes: Clos Figueres has a dense, rich ruby color with wonderful scents of ripe blackberries and blueberries intermingled with the rich mineral flavors of a great Priorat. On the palate, Clos Figueres is approachable with pure intense flavors and a lush smooth texture. Loaded with fresh red and black fruit, intermixed with minerals and spices, the finish is long and smooth. A delight for drinking over the next 12 to 15 years.
