Insane quality. Reasonably priced.

Domaine Robert-Denogent Description

The history of Domaine Robert Denogent dates to 1988 when Jean-Jacques Robert inherited 5 hectares of his Grandfathers estate in the Maconnais just outside the village of Fuisse. The fruit from the parcel that Jean-Jacque inherited had always been sold off to the other top producers in the region. These same parcels happened to be extremely unique micro-climates capable of producing the best wines that the Macon had to offer. Jean-Jacques happened to be friendly with two highly influential people in the wine trade, Marcel Lapierre (Top Morgon Producer) and Kermit Lynch (Importer). It was in fact Marcel and Kermit who influenced Jean-Jacques to establish a Domaine and take full advantage of the hallowed ground that he had inherited.

The wine is sourced from the Roberts Top Parcel “La Croix” where the vines now stand at over 80 years of age. As we all know old vines make the best wines, and these vines are among the oldest in the region. The subsoil of the vineyard is a dark, flaky schist that is unique subsoil to only this vineyard. Jean-Jacques is now joined by his son Nicolas who has helped improve the quality of their wine making process, particularly in the 2016 vintage. The 2016 vintage is the first year the Domaine began with experiments in biodynamics, and they shifted to a larger barrel with less new wood. The results of applying these techniques have brought this domain to new heights. The wine in the bottle speaks for itself.

Winemaker Notes: Domaine Robert-Denogent's top cuvée, La Croix is a bit of an anomaly: the soil of dark, flaky schist is without equal in all of Burgundy. It provides a stimulating stoniness to counterbalance the thick layers of dense, fleshy fruit.

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

The 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé La Croix Vieilles Vignes is back, this time after fully 35 months on the lees (readers will not that I reviewed the 30-month version last year). Unwinding in the glass with aromas of golden orchard fruit, toasted nuts, marzipan and iodine, it's full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a deep and intensely sapid core, concluding with a long and savory finish. This umami-bomb of a wine invites thrilling food pairings.
