Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey Vieilles Vignes 2022

Domaine Theulot-Juillot Description

You probably have not heard of Domaine Theulot-Juillot as they are a tiny 12-hectare property, less than 30 acres. Waveny Park here in New Canaan is 300 acres to give you an idea. The domaine is a completely family run estate in the heart of Mercurey. From their withholdings the Domaine produces 6 1er Cru wines, and a range of both red and white village wines. While it was Emile Juillot who founded the Domaine, it was his wife who passed the estate on to their granddaughter Nathalie in 1987. I felt this was important to note because it is rare for property to be transmitted from woman to woman in the region. Nathalie still runs the domaine today along with her husband.

I sat down with the importer of these wines and tasted through their range. The wine that really resonated with me was their Mercurey V.V. (old vine bottling). The V.V. Bottling is sourced from 3 different parcels One “high altitude” parcel on a wide plateau that culminates at 316 meters altitude, inclined towards the south with a soil of beige marl that brings density and freshness. A second parcel deep in a small valley-oriented south at 250 metres altitude. And finally, the third, sheltered from the wind in the heart of the village, confers maturity and warmth.

I loved the wine for how straightforward it was and for its simplicity. Soft silky entry into the palate and tannins that melted away on the back end. Its not complex, just clean pure pinot noir. You can enjoy this now or cellar for an additional 5-8 years.

Tasting Notes: Jean-Claude Theulot takes the oldest vines in three climats (Clos Laurent, Vaux and Montelons) and vinifies them separately to make this rich, generous wine that rivals many premiers’ crus in quality. 80% of the wine is aged in 228 liter French oak barrels (of which 20% are new) with the remaining 20% kept in stainless steel vats to retain the maximum of fruit. Rich and generous with vivid, red and black fruits and a touch of spicy oak. Drink 2026-2030.
