Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2021
Peter Sisseck is one of the greatest winemakers to grace Spain, his top wine under the Pingus label, Domino del Pingus is now selling well over $1000 a bottle, and it's one of the most sought-after wines coming out of Spain. Peter came to Spain back in 1993 to produce the wines for Hacienda Monasterio. While putting his blood, sweat, and tears into setting up Monasterio, Peter became enamored with all the extremely old vines of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) he would come across in Ribera. In 1995, Peter found vineyards containing ancient vines of Tinto Fino and decided to purchase the vineyard. He named the Estate “Pingus” after his childhood nickname, and the rest is history.
PSI is the 23rd letter in the Greek alphabet and is the name of Peter Sisseck's (of the coveted Pingus and Flor de Pingus) utopian wine from Ribera del Duero. Peter has sought out the best independent vineyard growers in Ribera and is incentivizing them to improve viticultural practices and shun chemicals, lower yields, and practice biodynamics by paying them increasingly for the fruit as they improve. The result is a "give back" to the region wine that also expresses the "soul" of Ribera.
We recently received an allocation of Pingus “Psi” their value wine, and it sold out in a flash. We just received a very small allocation of 5 cases of the 2020 Vintage of “Flor du Pingus” which is their middle tier of wine, and the wine is really starting to hit its stride. Peter has refined the selection of vineyards used for Flor. He has even replanted some key parcels with a “massale” selection from his best, old-clone parcels. Some of these parcels are utilized for their top wine “Dominio del Pingus” which now sells for well over $1000 a bottle.
In terms of quality to price ratio, this might not only be this winery’s best wine, but perhaps all of Spain. That is not just our opinion, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has written of Flor de Pingus: “In the price/quality sweepstakes, this might be Spain’s finest wine.”
Dark cherries, ripe but fresh blueberries, slate, violets and a hint of graphite. There is lushness of fruit but it remains fresh and very primary in the middle with powdery tannins and a long, even finish. Has volume and linearity as well. Drink or hold.
The 2021 Flor de Pingus is a village wine from La Horra, made with small vinifications by plot and then a blending exercise, so it's the wine they feel is most their style. They look for texture, looking for a delicate and elegant wine. The nose is very subtle and harmonious, super clean and with a lot of focus. There are no traces of oak on the nose. The profile of the wine is more in line with 2018 or 2016 than with 2015 or 2019. This has a velvety texture, an elegant mouthfeel and some restraint (he thinks the warm summer in 2021 made the plants slow down), and it is fresher than the wine from 2020. There's a very fine thread, with chalky and very elegant tannins. This delivered what the wine promised from barrel. Starting in 2023, the wine will be certified organic. They produced around 96,300 bottles and some larger formats. It was bottled in June 2023.
