Grable Vineyards Description

Grable Vineyards is owned and operated by husband-and-wife team, Amy & Michael Grable. In 2002 the couple purchased a 20-acre estate (510 feet above sea level) at the base of Mount St. Helena in the sought-after Knights Valley appellation, the ava that straddles Napa and Sonoma. The Knight’s Valley is where you will find top wineries such as Peter Michael, Speedy Creek, and Moran Manor. Top wineries like Clos du Bois source grapes in the Knights Valley because they understand the terroir and climate is idea for Bordeaux Varietals. The soil in this area is extremely deep which allows for excellent drainage. Under these conditions the roots of the vines must go deeper to seek water, and this stresses the vines. When the vines become stressed, yields become lower, berries are smaller, and this translates into a more complex berry. The balance and minerality to this wine are incredible.

The winemaker for Grable Patience is John Kongsgaard. John started planting vines in Napa in the 1970’s and bottled his first release under his own label in 1996. John is a napa legend and is mentor to some top winemakers in Napa such as Andy Erickson, the current winemaker @ Screaming Eagle. To say John knows his way around a vineyard and how to produce great wine would be an understatement.

We have previously offered Grable’s “Patience bottling” which was a big hit. This is Grables “Liquid Twitter” bottling. Having nothing to do with Elon Musk, Liquid Twitter is the tweet made by the tree swallows that nibble on insects and cruise for nest-mates among our vines. The Audubon Society calls the tree swallow’s voice a “cheerful series of liquid twitters”.

Vineyard Notes: Our estate vineyard sits 510 feet above sea level. Our vineyard soil is deep, well-draining alluvium, consisting of gravel, sand and clay. Because of the excellent drainage, the roots must grow deep to seek water, so our crop yields are lower, and berries are smaller with greater flavor concentration. The alluvial soil also provides the mineral component that gives our wines added complexity. The rootstock for our Bordeaux varietals was selected to take full advantage of soil conditions and preservation of water by dry farming. The result is an intensity of flavors that shows in our finished Cabernets.

Tasting Notes: On the nose petrichor, currant, dried black fruit. The wine is well integrated, focused with lovely texture. It finishes clean with spice and bright red fruit.
