Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee 2021
Gundlach Bundschu is one of the oldest wineries in the U.S. The winery's 320-acre Estate Vineyard, christened Rhine farm in 1858, is located at the crossroads of the Sonoma Valley, Carneros, and Napa Valley AVAs, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. The vineyard was re-planted after an earthquake and fire. Today the vineyards are around 50 years old, and they are really starting to come in a zone.
While many of their neighbors are selling lesser wines for double to triple the price, this wine is at the same price I was offering it to some of you over a decade ago. Big part of the reason for this is the property is fully paid off, and there is no mortgage. To be honest, I believe they could charge double for this wine, and you would still be happy with it at $40 a bottle. If you know me, I don’t like hyperbole. I stand by this statement.
As we keep saying, you must follow the great winemakers. The wines for Gundlach Bundschu are made by Keith Emerson. Keith has made wines for some incredible wineries and has worked with the best vineyard managers out there. Keith’s first big gig was working at Cakebread. From there, Keith went on to work with the great Phillipe Melka at Vineyard 29. Keith has also consulted for Robert Craig, and has worked under David Abreu, Mike Wolfe, as well as Jim Barbour who are without a doubt the best vineyard managers out there. While their resumes are TOO long to list. David Abreu alone consults for Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Pahlmeyer…
Winemaker Notes: A Bordeaux-obsessed blend featuring layer upon layer of ripe fruit - think boysenberry, cranberry and pomegranate - followed by a hint of toasty oak. Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée is a medium-bodied, red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot packed with juicy red fruit, black currants, and a dark chocolate finish. We’re getting silky tannins. Hints of oak and cedar. And an elegant structure with a finish that’s a real crowd-pleaser. Enjoy it on its own, or paired up with something as perfectly unassuming as the wine (Gundlach Bundschu especially loves it with backyard burgers).
Blend: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec
Velvety in texture and full in body, this moderately tannic wine is packed with milk chocolate, black cherries, and vanilla flavors. It is quietly powerful, and its rich chocolaty character lingers on the finish.
