Tenuta Luce Lucente 2021
Served @ DB's "90+ Pt Wines Under $30" Tasting
Luce started off as a joint venture between Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi. Mondavi knew back in the 70s that Montalcino was destined for great things, so he sought to find a foothold in the region. Together, Frescobaldi and Mondavi focused on blending the native Sangiovese varietal with Merlot. The elegance and structure of Sangiovese was complimented by the roundness and approachability of Merlot.
In 2005, Luce was no longer a joint venture. By this point, Mondavi was over 90 years of age and began to pull away from the wine industry. At this time, Lamberto Frescobaldi took over the reins of the estate. In 1998, Lamberto released the first vintage of “Lucente” and in 2003, the first vintage of Luce Brunello was released.
Luce Brunello is one of the most sought-after Brunellos in the marketplace. Our allocation doesn’t even hit the website as we have withstanding orders for the wine, and it's sold out prior to hitting the showroom floor.
Lucente is an incredible value from this great producer and it’s a calling card to both their Brunello and “Tenuta Luce”, their flagship super Tuscan blend.
It’s also important to note that this wine is 2021 vintage. 2021 to me is up there with the great Italian vintages, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Everything we have tasted from this vintage has been stellar. It was really hard to “miss” in 2021.
Rich cherries, cassis, fresh olives, and dark spices. Svelte, fine tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate, showing lots of juicy berries and a linear, extensive finish. Excellent length, focus, and structure here.
This is another robust wine from Tenuta Luce with immediate notes of maple syrup and brown sugar. Made with a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Sangiovese, the 2021 Lucente releases aromas of cherry cola, Tootsie Roll, and toasted hazelnut. With 300,000 bottles made, you get a big and burley red wine.
