Pio Cesare is one of the finest producers in Piedmont. They are family owned and operated and have been producing world class wine since 1881. The Winery was started by Cesare Pio, and he was instrumental in spreading the name Barolo and its great wines all over Europe. 
 
The 2019 Vintage in Barolo is one for the ages. Robert Parker awarded the vintage 96 Pts. Only 3 vintages, 1989, 2006, and 2016 have been scored higher than 2019 and only by 1 pt.

The 2019 release of Pio Cesare’s Barolo is sourced from family-owned vineyards in different zones of Barolo in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, Collaretto e Lirano), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava e Carzello), La Morra (Roncaglie), Barolo – Novello (Ravera), and from the recently acquired in Monforte (Mosconi). The result is a wine that embraces and encapsulates the different terroirs and vineyards of Barolo. The result in 2019 is a wine that has structure, harmony, and elegance, soft tannins and balanced fruit that is drinking superbly in its youth but with a long aging potential.

 

Pio Cesare does a great job with its classic 2019 Barolo (in production since 1881). The bottom of the front label reads "Barolo Pio" in memory of the legendary Pio Boffa. He was a wine entrepreneur who gained the immediate respect and love of all those who knew him. He passed away tragically during the COVID-19 pandemic just as the vaccines were being rolled out. This is a large production of about 70,000 bottles with fruit sourced from across seven vineyards in five villages. Despite those ambitious numbers, the wine remains strictly focused on bright Nebbiolo fruit with red cassis and aniseed. The finish is smooth with tannins that elegantly dissolve over the palate.
