Protos Finca El Grajo Viejo 2019

Protos Description

The history of “Protos” dates all the way back to 1927. 11 Viticulturalist’s came together to form “Bodegas Ribera del Duero Winery” in an effort to try to create great quality wines that fell under one brand. These 11 men were visionaries and they know the importance of focusing on the “terrior” of the land.

In 1982 Bodegas Ribera del Duero winery, along with the help of the great Vega Sicilia formed what is now the D.O. of Ribera del Duero. The Bodegas de Ribera del Duero Winery authorized the D.O. to use their brand name for the founding of the appellation, which is when they renamed their winery “Protos”. Protos is the Greek word meaning “first”, and since 1927 Protos has stayed true to their claim of being the first winery in the region, NOT Vega Sicilia as many might assume. The winery is located in a specific area of Ribera known as Penafiel. This area is where the best wines from the D.O. hail from, Pingus, Vega Sicilia, Bodegas Emilio Moro, Pasquera. These are all considered to be iconic producers that produce world class red wines.

Winemaker Notes: Deep cherry color with purple hues. Elegant wine, with a good aromatic range and great complexity. Aromatic bouquet of excellent mature black fruit, spicy notes, balsamic, toasted and mineral notes. Tasty, broad, powerful, but with fine and elegant tannins, with the acidity of vines grown in very poor land. Long, pleasant and persistent finish. It will have a long life because of its structured tannins and noble-acidity.

Pair with roasted pork, red meat, chorizos, fois gras and mature cheeses.

Protos Selección Finca El Grajo Viejo 2019  is made thanks to the sum of Tempranillo vines over 70 years old and with low yields, planted in 18 different plots in Ribera del Duero, and careful vinification in the cellar, with a double selection table, maceration with skins, two barrel fermentations and 18 months of aging in French oak.

Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points

Dark violet to the eye, this wine has black currant, clove and dark chocolate aromas. It lights up the palate with black cherry, Mission fig, milk chocolate, anisette, coffee bean and orange zest flavors. Bold acidity and powerful tannins are well matched. Drink this wine through 2039. MIKE DESIMONE Cellar Selection
