Wise Acre Cabernet 2013
Served @ DB's "Aged out wines" Tasting.
The first “Cult” wine of this Generation. Less than 100 cases produced. Superior farming practices, organic, biodynamic, as well as sustainable. Focus is on quality and not quantity. Since the vineyard is so small, each vine is cared for by hand. The wines are authentic, and unpretentious….
Wise Acre is owned by Lynn and Kirk Grace. Kirk is currently the Vineyard Manger @ Stag’s Leap Cellar. Kirk’s parents were the proprietors for Grace Family Vineyards. Wise Acre is a small single vineyard (1/2 acre in size) located at the base of Howell Mtn. It is one of the smallest estates in Napa. They produce around 100 cases a year, depending on vintage. Lynn and Kirk are farmers by trade, so they believe if the vineyard management is correct, the farm contributes to the Wise Acre Vineyard's overall health of the people and environment around it. They prepare farm to table meals utilizing only produce grown in house. From garlic to pumpkins.
The cornerstone of this property is the Vineyard. The grapes sourced from this tiny estate are the ultimate expression of the terrior from which it is sourced. Everything about this estate is an absolute labor of love, and it comes through in the wine. The wines have extremely pure fruit, and there is power to the wines matched with elegance. They are big and bold on palate, but finish gracefully due to their low ABV% around 13.8%
Like any wine, the most important component is the winemaker. The wines for Wise Acre are made by Helen Keplinger. Helen is a rockstar. Trained at UC Davis, the top Enology school in the U.S. Helen has worked with incredible Vineyard Managers in Napa; Heidi Barret (Screaming Eagle), Michael Rolland (Harlan, Bond), and David Abreu (Colgin, Bryant). These are not SOME of the greatest consulting Enologists in the world, they ARE the best of the best. Helen has gone on to work for some of the top producers, such as Bryant, Kenzo Estate, and many more.
Winery Tasting Notes: The bouquet is elegant featuring plenty of fruit but without being too showy or too ripe. Red fruit, raspberry, cranberry and a floral component show on the nose. A delicate smokiness underlies the fruit – a smokiness that shows no greenness of aroma. The wine’s acidity is all natural and immediately causes one to salivate. For such a young wine and for being a barrel sample, the palate is remarkably balanced between fruit, acidity and structure. Notes of both black and red fruit including black cherry and cassis show with lingering delicate tannins which anchor a pleasing rounded finish.
