Bethel Heights is a 75-acre estate located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA in the Willamette Valley. Founded in 1977 by two brothers, Ted and Terry Casteel, Bethel Heights Estate vineyard is one of the oldest in the region. Initially viticulturalists in the region, Bethel Heights started in the industry by selling their produce to producers such as Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon as he wanted to produce an Oregon style Pinot Noir. Randall Grahm’s Pinot received massive press from Anthony Dias Blue, a famed wine critic. As Bethel Heights gained notoriety for their fruit, they stopped selling their fruit to other wineries in 1992.
The Bethel Heights Winery has gained a reputation over the years as a pioneer in sustainable farming. Ted Casteel led the efforts in creating “LIVE” (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) certification program. All farming at Bethel Heights is done organically, as well as bio-dynamically. Not only do they create incredible wine, but they do also do so by minimizing the carbon footprint, which we find commendable. Bethel Heights has been a carbon neutral winery since 2010!
Sleek and handsomely structured, with expressive raspberry and red plum flavors laced with black tea, forest floor, and hints of mineral, building tension toward medium-grained tannins.
Aromas of red currants and cherry drops with citrus rind, lilac, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied, fresh, and crunchy, with chalky tannins and vivid acidity. Bright, blue-fruited finish. A little chewy at the end. Drink or hold.
Matured in 25% new oak, the 2021 Pinot Noir Estate has a medium ruby-purple color and scents of blueberries, cranberries, woodsmoke, pipe tobacco, and burnt orange peel. The light-bodied palate is austere with mineral-driven fruit, bright acidity, chalky tannins, and a slight bitterness on the finish. There's a rusticity to this wine that's unusual for Bethel Heights.
