Chateau Canon Chaigneau Description

The Winemaker: The wines at Chateau Canon Chaigneau are made by Thierry Garnaud, the cellar master at Chateau Cheval Blanc for 35 vintages. Thierry has over ten, 100 Point wines to his credit. Thierry’s methods are minimal intervention, and letting the vines and grapes do the talking. Thierry has been making the wines at Chateau Canon Chaigneau since 1995.

The Subsoil: The “Grand Vin” bottling produced by Canon Chaigneau is sourced from a small 21-hectare plot named the Neac plateau. This plateau is situated 1 km north of the Pomerol plateau, this is where wines such as Chateau Petrus, Client, La Conseilante and Lafleur can be found. These wines sell for $100s to $1000s a bottle. This region is where some of the worlds' most delicious, profound, sought after, age worthy, and expensive bottles are produced.

The Vintage:I have always told customers vintage can be a little over-blown. We do see vintage playing a larger role in areas like Bordeaux as law prohibits things such as irrigation and the use of chemicals. The 2019 vintage in Pomerol was awarded 96 Pts (as a vintage) by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Only 2016 and 2009 have scored higher as a vintage. Parker labeled the 2019 vintage in Pomerol as “Extraordinary”.

92 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - "Ample and caressing in feel. Dark red/black fruit, mint, spice, and floral accents on the nose play off the wine's considerable richness beautifully. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and full, substantial, yet focused, with flavors of black cherry, blueberries, black plums, cocoa, and licorice. Time in the glass brings out its resonance and overall character. The 2019 is impeccable.",

Vinous: 91 Points

The 2019 Canon Chaigneau has more fruit on the nose compared to the Cuve 8A, though that is partly because it is less reduced. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fleshier than the Cuve 8A, quite substantial, yet focused, with a judicious touch of white pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent."
