Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2019
Vineyards adjacent to Poggio di Soto
We absolutely adore the Brunello’s from the Le Ragnaie property. Classically styled, incredible florals on the nose, medium to full on palate, and will age out incredibly well. We are very lucky to be able to offer these wines as they are highly allocated. Le Ragnaie’s wines are made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso and exhibit elegance and finesse. All four Brunello wines are fermented in concrete without selected yeast followed by a long maceration of up to 90 days and three years in large Slavonian oak botti. All wines are bottled unfiltered and certified organic in the vineyards and cellar.
What sets this Le Ragnaie apart from many of the other producers in the region is their estate vineyards are split up into three different parcels. This allows Le Ragnaie to produce three different styles of Brunello di Montalcino that are terroir driven. This philosophy is not common in the region as most producers put out a wine to represent the producer not the land it is sourced from. This philosophy of winemaking is more common in regions like Burgundy and Napa, where subsoil is everything to a wine. There is a reason why wines sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy or Beckstoffer To Kalon in Oakville sell for what they do.
Its also very important to note that Le Ragnies vineyards sit at the highest altitude allowed by the consortium to produce Brunello di Montalcino. Vines grown at higher altitudes produce a smaller more intense berry with thicker skins. This translates into a more concentrated wine with more structure to age.
Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2019: blend of cru vineyards. Grapes underwent a shorter maceration period of 45 days before ageing in large Slavonian oak.
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows delicate aromas of blue flower, redcurrant, cranberry and potting soils. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from across the estate vineyard holdings ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level, or the ceiling of the appellation. Baking spice is delivered to the palate with silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is extremely fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello, with 38,500 bottles made
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with depths of dark red fruit and exotic spice. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied textures and vibrant acidity that propels its tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones as rosy inner florals race across the palate. It tapers off with admirable length and concentration. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum. The 2019 is a gorgeous blend of vintage and house style. Don't miss it.
