Wayfarer Pinot Noir 2019
Helen Turley brought Jayson Pahlmeyer over to the “Wayfarer Vineyard” in 1998 as Dave and Dorothy Davis put their farm up for sale. The vineyard site is right down the street from Marcassin. When it comes to pinot noir in California, this is hallowed ground. The Davis’s lived at the farm since the 1970’s, living off the grid and practicing all organic and sustainable farming. Jayson had an epiphany at that very moment as he was taking in the cool sea air that was tempering the brilliant sun. Jayson knew instantly that this would be the site to produce EXCEPTIONAL pinot noir and chardonnay. IT had all the components he was looking for.
Helen Turley at that time declared the Wayfarer Vineyard to become the “La Tache of California”. La Tache is regarded by many as one of the finest vineyards in the world for pinot noir. It is exclusively farmed by Domane de la Romanee Conti as it is a Monopole. So, this is quite a statement from a legendary winemaker.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: Violet, lavender and boysenberry aromas emerge from the glass, along with cherry, plum, dried herbs and fennel seed. A silky entry, lush body and creamy notes on the finish are juxtaposed by lively acidity, bringing a beautiful tension to the wine. This is a wonderfully complete Pinot Noir, a combination of focus and finesse, and it has a subtle power that will carry this vintage for many years.
I am telling you now, when you speak of the top pinots currently coming out of California, Wayfarer should be on the list.
The wines are approachable, and drinkable now. But as Jeb Dunnuck states below, smart money will give this wine some time in the cellar, and it will certainly pay some dividends. This is not a cherry-cola scent pinot noir from the Russian river. It is aromatic, medium bodied, and has layering of flavor. REAL PINOT!!!! Cali fruit, yet Burgundian in its nature.
94 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - The 2019 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard is one of the more approachable Pinots in the lineup, yet smart money will still give bottles a handful of years in the cellar. Spiced cherries, mulberries, spicy oak, violets, and orange blossom all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a round, expansive texture, more velvety tannins, and a great finish.
The 2019 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard comes from all 11 clones grown on the Wayfarer property. Medium ruby-purple in color, it has broody aromas of blood orange, iron, rhubarb and cranberry sauce with notes of dusty earth and dried herbs. The palate manages incredible intensity, lift and expansive flavor layers with a very long, juicy finish that continually calls you in for another sip!
