Wayfarer Pinot Noir 2021
Jayson Pahlmeyer is the proprietor of Wayfarer. Jason has been making wine in napa for over 30 years. As you can see in the picture, he has been featured in top publications such as Time Magazine. I am sure many of you have heard of Pahlmeyer, their proprietary red is extremely sought after. Not only is Jayson a winemaker, but he is a lover of great himself. Like most oenophile’s Jason became entranced by the wines from Burgundy over the years. In the early 1990’s Jason started his quest to seek out the finest vineyards to produce top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the two noble varietals of Burgundy.
The wayfarer vineyard was planted in 2002 by one of the best Vineyard Managers to ever grace California, David Abreu . David cast of clients includes but is not limited to producers such as Harlan, Blankiet, Staglin, Colgin, Bryant, Fisher, Araujo, Grace, Viader, and Screaming Eagle. These ARE the best of the best producers in Napa, bar none.
Today the wines of Wayfarer are really coming into their zone and at the helm are two incredible female winemakers. The wines are made by Jayson’s Daughter Chloe along with top winemaker Bibiana Gonzales Rave. Bibiana is a name you will want to remember. Her pursuit of excellence has led her to work with some of the top wineries in France such as Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion and Château la Dominique in Bordeaux, Michel & Stephane Ogier and Domaine Clusel-Roch in Côte-Rôtie, Domaine du Scheidecker in Alsace and Domaine du Devevey in Burgundy. Bibiana is highly decorated as a winemaker, in 2013 and 2015 Bibiana was named “Winemaker of the Year” by the San Francisco chronicle.
If you enjoy the best, when it comes to Sonoma Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this winery should be in your collection.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: Violet, lavender and boysenberry aromas emerge from the glass, along with cherry, plum, dried herbs and fennel seed. A silky entry, lush body and creamy notes on the finish are juxtaposed by lively acidity, bringing a beautiful tension to the wine. This is a wonderfully complete Pinot Noir, a combination of focus and finesse, and it has a subtle power that will carry this vintage for many years.
The 2021 Pinot Noir The Estate (previously labeled "Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard") has inviting aromas of cranberry sauce, mushroom, allspice and bitters. The palate's concentrated, nuanced fruit is structured by focused acidity and generous, powdery tannins, and it finishes with a flourish of spicy accents. It's drinking beautifully now and will develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade.
