Witchery is a winery located in the Heart of St Helena founded by Gordon Larum and Richard and Dawn Hawthorne in 2009. The best move they made was hiring Grant to make their wines. Many will see the name “Witchery” and automatically think of a gnarly woman riding a broomstick. While that’s understandable, if you trace back the root’s of the word it simply means “an irresistible fascination”. It is this fascination that brought both “Gordy” and Hawthorne’s to napa in pursuit of making incredible quality wine.

Gordy was the key in getting this winery off the ground. Gordy is a native, born and raised in St Helena. Gordy’s father moved the family out to Napa when he was hired as the Purchasing director for Robert Mondavi Winery and also Opus One further down the road. Gordy worked for a number of great napa wineries over the year’s. He got his start @ Beringer, and went on to work for Clos Pegase, Kuleto Estate, and Pine Ridge. His time at Pine Ridge was most important to note because it was at this time that Gordy met Grant Long Jr. Extremely impressed with the passion and knowledge of wine making Grant possesses, Gordy and the Hawthone’s hired Grant to make the 2010 Vintage’s of the Witchery wines and he has been their winemaker since.

Witchery’s focus is small production Cabernet’s from top vineyard sites in napa, mainly hillside fruit. It is also important to note, Gordy’s step-father happens to be Mark Neal. Mark is the son of legendary vineyard manager Jack Neal of “Jack Neal & Son”. Since 1984 Jack Neal & Son manages the most certified acres in the Napa Valley today. The connection between Gordy and Mark is instrumental in the quality of Witcheries wines as Witchery is able to source fruit from premium vineyards that include Marks Personal Vineyard located on Howell Mountain.

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot (2018)

The Cabernet is sourced from their Rutherford Block. Cabernet Franc is sourced off of their estate Howell Mountain Property and the petit Verdot is sourced from Oakville.

Tasting Notes: Witchery Proprietary Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Layered with remarkable complexity and intensity of flavors and aromas, balance and opulence. It is a precise wine with defined structure and immense aging potential and at the same time, a seductive wine of exceptional fruit finesse, and multilayered mouthfeel.
