Torbreck Juveniles Barossa Valley 2021
Served @ DB's "90+ Pts Wines under $30" Tasting
Cuvée Juveniles was created as a 'Cote Du Rhone' inspired bistro wine from the classic Barossa varieties of Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and Shiraz from mostly old, unirrigated vineyards. These varieties are the cornerstone of The Barossa Valley and are intrinsic in the wines that are so easily appreciated around the world and often referred to as GSM blends by sommeliers and consumers alike. The wines hallmark is its freshness due to no oak ageing and as the name describes it is a wine best drunk in its youth, poured by the glass at your favourite restaurant.
There's quite a savory, earthy edge to this Rhône-based blend. Plump Damson plum fruit, fresh violets, cumin and a slight charred-beets nuance opens. It's a medium-bodied bottling with supple, satiny fruit and quite chiseled, savory tannins. Finds a lovely place between texture and succulence.
A blend of Grenache, Mataro, Carignan, Counoise and Shiraz, the 2021 Cuvee Juveniles is unbaked, crunchy, juicy and of a light frame-it doesn't have any gravitas or floor, but the fruit that floats above it is buoyant and lively. This would be gorgeous by the glass in a bar in Paris... I do miss the original blue and red label.
